Rich birdlife and open rocky areas

The islands consist largely of rock outcrops, covered with sparse pine forest. Some small hardwood stands can be found in protected areas. In larger depressions in the rock which can accumulate damp, moss and swamp vegetation grows, with sphagnum, cotton grass, hare’s tail cotton grass, and cranberry. A population of yew grows at Lilla Husarn. The reserve has a rich birdlife, and Stora Saltkråkan, Husar Holmen and the surrounding islets, in particular, are valuable for waterfowl such as eider duck, tufted ducks and merganser.
