The “Skräpet till ytan” project will clear refuse from the seabeds in popular natural anchorages. The long-term character and aim of the project, however, deal with changing attitudes and behaviour.
As recently as 50 years ago, visitors to the archipelago considered that throwing a bottle or can overboard was acceptable behaviour. Attitudes are better today, but the improvement has not been sufficient. Divers find everything during the clearing work from bottles to car batteries. Rubbish on the seabed can harm both animals and humans. Sharp edges and toxic substances have no place under the surface, and we hope that everyone will see something that makes them think, when they see what the divers bring to the surface.
